Horrible Bosses is outrageously hysterical
In director Seth Gordon’s latest comedy venture, three of Hollywood’s funniest actors come together to bring down their overbearing, inappropriate, and ruthless bosses, who just so happen to be three huge actors themselves.
The film opens with an introduction to each lead actor and their respective horrible boss. Nick, played by Jason Bateman (Arrested Development, The Switch), is a diligent office employee in pursuit of a promotion, but is overlooked and pushed around by his eccentric boss Dave Harken, played by Kevin Spacey (American Beauty, 21). Dale, played by Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Going the Distance), is a dental assistant subjected to continuous sexual harassment and vulgarities at the hand of his boss Julia, played by Jennifer Aniston (Friends, Just Go With It). Kurt, played by Jason Sudeikis (Saturday Night Live, Hall Pass), is the only one who enjoys working for his boss (played by Donald Sutherland), until he is forced to work for his boss’ cocaine-abusing son Bobby, played by Colin Farrell (Phone Booth, S.W.A.T.), following a heart attack.
After each reaching a breaking point at their respective work places, Nick, Dale, and Kurt come up with a plan to kill each other’s bosses, with the help from Dean “Motherfucker” Jones, played by Jamie Foxx (Ray, Collateral), who aids the three friends as their murder consultant. While the ideas are all there for the group, nothing goes according to plan. They then find themselves in a series of sticky situations, including leaving a stolen cell phone of one boss in another boss’ house. The three friends find themselves in even more trouble when one boss is murdered and they are directly tied back to the scene of the crime.
The film’s stars each shine in their performances, with Charlie Day particularly standing out among the three male leads. His offbeat humor and comedic timing were strong for his first major film role and his chemistry with Bateman and Sudeikis felt genuine. Spacey, Aniston, and Farrell contributed major laughs and cringes to their unlikeable yet hilarious roles, with Spacey standing out as the ultimate boss from hell and Aniston taking a big and impressive 180 from her typical film roles.
Overall, Horrible Bosses is a hilarious good time that has genuine laughs throughout the film. The all-star cast does a great and convincing job for each of their characters and audiences will definitely be surprised with some of the performances and the outcome of the film.
