After Life
Director Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo’s film was definitely a mystery and one to check out!
The film starts out with showing us that Anna Taylor (Christina Ricci), a young schoolteacher, is unhappy with her life. Right off the bat Anna’s mind seems to be somewhere else while her and her boyfriend Paul (Justin Long) are making love. She seems unhappy and lost. Paul realizes that Anna isn’t the same person that he met, and calls her out on it, but she doesn’t say much. Later on that night Paul invites Anna to dinner with the intention of proposing to her, but it doesn’t quiet work out that way. Instead they get into an argument causing her to rush out of the restaurant very upset and gets into a horrific car accident.
Anna wakes up and finds herself on a mortuary bed, being prepared for her funeral! As the local funeral director Eliot Deacon (Liam Neeson) is explaining to her that she is dead, Anna begins to freak out and is in disbelief because she feels very much alive. After sometime Eliot convinces her that she is in the transition to the afterlife and only he’s capable of seeing her due to his so called ability of speaking to the dead.
The audience gets caught up in this mystery, having us ask the same question over and over again: Is Anna dead or alive? The suspense has us on our toes, is Eliot a sympathetic, caring guy whose trying to help this lost girl cross over? Or is he some psycho killer who needs help? I questioned myself quite often throughout the film; I didn’t know whether or not to like Anna or sympathize with the funeral director. It was driving me crazy!
One of Anna’s students, Jack (Chandler Canterbury) was off wondering around the mortuary and happened to see Anna through the window standing. It was then that this mystery started to reveal itself. Paul believed that Anna was still alive after receiving different signs from her and Jack, but everyone around him thought he was just loosing his mind. The audience really connects with Paul here and the race to save Anna’s life begins.
Overall I did feel like this film sent out a good message to value and cherish our lives while we can, life can be too short. The film definitely keeps you wide-awake and leaves you not knowing what to expect next! It has a little of the sixth sense theme to it.
