Jason Derulo

Jason Derulo is a new artist in the industry that started out with just two hit singles last year - “Whatcha Say” and “In My Head.” With his debut single “Whatcha Say” hitting #1 in the U.S. and other countries his name needs no explanation. The hit singles have been on automatic replay on every hit music station, making Jason Derulo a household name in the music industry! His first full self-titled album, an assembly of pop songs (tinged with a little hip hop), contains songs of heartbreak, heartache, and the oh so addicting love songs that follow a story of cheating and then being the one cheated on!

The album begins with “Whatcha Say,” featuring a heavy sampling of Imogen Heap’s song “Hide and Seek,” is a song about cheating and being discovered with lyrics like “I don’t want you to leave me, though you caught me cheatin.” Listeners discover that the relationship in fact didn’t last as it transitions to the song “Ridin’ Solo” which talks about being single, being free of the pain, and now it’s “time to do things I like, going to the clubs, everything’s alright.”

“In my Head“ is another hit single that topped the charts and goes into the familiar story of falling for someone after you’ve been single for awhile. This song contains one of my favorite, and kind of corny, lyrics “everyone’s lookin’ for love, ain’t that the reason you at this club,” only because the club is always the first place to go after that bittersweet breakup!

The next two songs, “The Sky’s the Limit” and “What if,” are slower songs that explain his feeling for this new found girl that takes him “higher than I’ve ever been before […] but you don’t even know my name!”

“Love Hangover” is a song about meeting a girl at the bar, having a few drinks, taking the party home, and waking up with her after the party is over. The lyrics “it was a fling, but I really don’t regret a thing” transition’s nicely into “Encore” which is literally an encore of the last song and asks “Can we do this again?”

Apparently they did it several more times as the song “Fallen” explains how he’s fallen hard and wants to take that chance with love! I love the song mainly for its allusions to powerful and publicly in love couples with lyrics like “we can be like Jay and Beyonce,” “rule the world like Michelle and Barack.”

The final song “Blind” begins with a really catchy intro and continues to explain the “beautiful liar” he found in the girl he fell in love with, him now being the victim of lies and cheating.

The album also contains an acoustic version of “Whatcha Say,” which beautifully displays Derulo’s vocal talents, and a remix of “In My Head.”

Derulo is definitely another heartbreaker in the music game so watch out Bieber!
