Katy Perry’s California Dreams Tour invades Los Angeles

Pop singer Katy Perry brought her California Dreams Tour to her hometown of Los Angeles for a three-night engagement at the Nokia Theater LA Live this weekend, bringing along some furry friends, an army of dancers, and plenty of tricks up her multi-colored costumes.

Following the release of her second album, Teenage Dream, last summer, Katy Perry’s success has skyrocketed to incredible heights, garnering five Billboard number one singles from the album (a feat only matched by Michael Jackson) and several 2010 Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. Touring around the world since February, Katy finally touched down on American soil in June and was able to bring her show to Los Angeles this past weekend. Armed with numerous hits and some fun cover songs, Katy’s tour was one to be remembered and left Los Angeles in awe.

The show began with video of Katy living in a colorless world, working as a butcher’s assistant. Unable to stomach the work, she is fired and stumbles across a bakery, where upon buying a cupcake, falls head over heels for the baker boy. That night, Katy’s dream takes her into a new world of color and candy, where she must find her lost cat, Kitty, and the man of her dreams. Perry then emerges from the stage to perform her hit “Teenage Dream”. “Hummingbird Heartbeat” quickly followed before Katy brought out a human slot machine and an Elvis impersonator for her song “Waking Up In Vegas”.

She leaves the stage while video shows Katy lost at a fork in the road in candy land, and upon taking the shortcut, she encounters two mimes who join her on stage for her song “Ur So Gay”. The song “Peacock” prompted Katy to change into an elaborate feathered outfit while for the song “I Kissed A Girl”, she changed into a long sequined dress and boa, changing the arrangement to be cabaret style for the first verse and chorus. Prior to the “I Kissed A Girl” performance, Perry brought a lucky male audience member on stage, who not only received a kiss from Katy, but who also planted one of his own on the singer’s cheek in front of her actor-husband, Russell Brand.

The next section of the show saw Katy change into a cat suit, where she performed “Circle The Drain”, “E.T.”, and “Who Am I Living For?”. For “Pearl” and “Not Like The Movies”, the audience saw Katy rising on two separate platforms, with the former number rising from the B-stage in a long sequined cloak and the latter on a rose-covered swing with video of cartoons characters kissing playing behind her. Katy then incorporated karaoke into her next number, singing a medley of her favorite songs that included Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In The World), Jay-Z’s “Big Pimpin”, Rebecca Black’s “Friday”, and Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair”. She closed out the section of the show with “Thinking Of You”, where she played the guitar and floated on a cotton-candy cloud into the audience.

Video appeared yet again on the big screens, showing Katy receiving an invitation to the Baker’s Ball, but with nothing to wear. She then performed the song “Hot n Cold”, where she changed dresses seven times until she found the right one. Her current hit “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” followed, where fans were able to submit photos of their own Friday nights to appear on screen. “Firework” was her next number, and a favorite of the night, that featured Katy in her signature blue wig and spectacular pyrotechnics. She followed with a cover of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” before video appeared of Katy waking from her dream to find herself with the baker’s boy. Dressed in a silver Hershey’s Kisses-bra, she performed her final number “California Gurls”, where she squirted the crowd with a whipped-cream gun before taking a bow with her band and dancers.

Katy Perry, while only two albums into her relatively short career, appears as though she is a seasoned pro at putting on a show for her fans. Not only did she incorporate dance and different theatrics into each number, her vocals managed to keep up with her all night, even reaching high notes she joked she didn’t know she had in her. Katy’s interaction with the audience was consistent throughout the night, taking directly to everyone as if she knew them and taking pictures with fans who joined her onstage to dance. Everything about the California Dreams Tour was true to Katy Perry as an artist, from her elaborate costumes to her quirky stage persona to the smell of cotton-candy that filled the theater. With tickets no higher than $45 before service fees, Katy Perry’s tour is definitely worth every penny and a must see for fans.
