Katy Perry ties a #1s record with Michael Jackson
Pop-singer Katy Perry becomes the first female artist and only the second artist in history to have five consecutive Billboard Hot 100 singles reach the number one spot, something only the legendary Michael Jackson has achieved.
On the week of August 18th 2011, Katy Perry’s historic moment in music will be made official, when her latest single “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”, reaches the top of the charts. This is the first time in the 53-year history of the Billboard Hot 100 chart that a female artist has had five consecutive number one singles from one album. Perry’s second album, 2010’s Teenage Dream, is responsible for the numerous hits, having released the number one singles “California Gurls”, “Teenage Dream”, “Firework”, and “E.T.” over the past year in addition to “Last Friday Night”.
The late and legendary pop singer Michael Jackson is the only other artist in history to have achieved such success from one album. His highly successful 1987 LP, “Bad”, released five Billboard Hot 100 singles in row that included “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”, “Bad”, “The Way You Make Me Feel”, “Man in the Mirror”, and “Dirty Diana”. Throughout the course of Jackson’s career he managed to score over a dozen Billboard Hot 100 number one singles and in just three years since her debut Billboard number one single “I Kissed A Girl”, “T.G.I.F” becomes her sixth number one overall on the Hot 100 chart.
Perry released a remix to “Last Friday Night” last week, featuring rapper Missy Elliott, a move that managed to raise sales and radio play of the song even further, catapulting it even faster to the top of the charts. In addition to her California Dreams Tour, for which she has been traveling the world since February, Katy Perry has remained a constant fixture in the media, something that has without a doubt helped boost her music sales. Throughout the last quarter of 2010 and most of 2011, Perry has made several television appearances (American Idol among them), graced magazine covers (twice for Rolling Stone), and made her feature film debut as the voice of Smurfette in The Smurfs. In addition to heavy promotion for her album and its hit singles, Katy was nominated for five 2010 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.
