John Singleton talked to about directing NWA film.

SlashFilm is reporting that John Singleton has been contacted to direct a NWA biopic. The director talked a little bit about it during an interview for his upcoming film, Abduction:

“I can’t talk too prematurely about the stuff I’m doing because nothing’s come to fruition yet, but Cube and I are talking about doing the N.W.A. story… The script is really, really good, and so we’re just figuring it out. New Line really wants to make it.”

If you were around the time Boyz N The Hood came out, John Singleton was one of the hottest directors to kick the doors of Hollywood since Spike Lee. When auteurs such as Quentin Taratino started emerging, many thought Singleton was the first in line. That notion quickly fell the moment Poetic Justice came out, but I've always hoped the director would return to form. To be honest: He hasn't made a good film since his very first film. Baby Boy was a step in the right direction, and Taraji P. Henson gave a very invigorating performance, but it was just shy from being as good as it should have been. To be fair, Poetic Justice isn't necessarily bad. He tried doing something different with the setting, and I'll give him credit for his efforts, but the story, once again, was not as good as it should have been.

Abduction came out of nowhere. Considering Singleton is a named director, I'm quite surprised how many people do not realize he is directing it...Actually, I'm not surprised. Just took at the trailer. It's hard to believe that the man who once showed America what living in the hood was really like is making a film with the werewolf from Twilight who has a strong phobia of shirts.

Where is all this rambling leading to? This NWA film could be the kick in the teeth Singleton needs to gain his respect back as a legitimate filmmaker. It pretty much hits all of the key notes Boyz N The Hood hit, such as a group of friends growing up and splitting apart when their destinies drift apart from each other, and showcases the gangster lifestyle that Singleton focused on in his first film. An NWA film may have been hinted at since the group had their reunion in 2000, but with someone like John Singleton involved it might actually come to fruition.
