The Underground Tournament League 5

The Underground Tournament League (UGTL for short), is a Street Fighter 4 tournament that is local to the Los Angeles area. They hold tournaments in the heart of LA and welcome anyone and everyone to join and to come and watch. UGTL’s 5th event took place on the 30th of January with a turnout of over 150 people, 62 others were competing in the tournament. Among the 62 contestants, well known names in the Street Fighter competition and tournaments such as Yeb, ComboFiend, ComboJac, and onlinetony were all present at the event, to take on all challengers as well as each other.

The rules of UGTL are simple, double elimination and no macro controller. The proceedings were: whoever got their name called would report to a station for a best out of 3 matches, with more than 12 playable stations. Friends, teammates, rivals or even new faces faced off against each other for more than 5 hrs of fierce competitions where anything could happen and one mistake could cost you a match.

In the end, it was ComboFiend who took first prize, ComboJac came in second, and onlinetony finished in 3rd place. On top of the tournament event, the people from UGTL offer everyone present, contestants and spectators alike, cheap food and drinks with the special being homemade taco’s made to order for a $1. Contestants and spectators alike waited in line for some tasty taco’s.

The UGTL also gave those who weren’t completing a chance to play other titles for fun like: “Tatsunoko vs. Capcom”, “Mario Brother Wii”, and “Super Smash Brother Melee”, “Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo”, plus player’s choices in the casual gaming lounge for people to play and enjoy, try out new games and even make friends.

A nice place to be at during UGTL 5 was a small area near the casual lounge where a few artists showed off their art skills, displaying their talents and putting the works they did that night on sale; taking commissions on the spot. While the tournament was running and the casual lounge was filled with people socializing or playing games, a large group surrounded the artists and watched some great fan art being created.

There were also some vendors offering services like arcade stick modding and selling parts for people to mod their own arcade stick, which is popular among tournament goers. Have a Hori EX Pro or Madcatz Street Fighter stick and want to change to buttons around or even the Stick? All the parts were available on the scene and could be modified on the spot for you.

The event was a great place for people to test their skills, face off against some of the top competitors locally in California, meet new friends and just chill out, and with UGTL 5 done, UGTL 6 can only get much bigger. We look forward to what will come.
