Watching some developers lead me through a demo of the single player, I initially wasn’t too excited. It’s a driving game about cops. In my mind, True Crime: Streets of LA can’t be topped. But then he introduced the Shift system. My interest was caught. While driving, Tanner can jump out of the car in an almost out of body experience kind of way, and commandeer a new car. I’m a fan of doing new things, and this certainly caught my eye. Shifting between cars is a part of the story, as the player can be chasing someone, and then shift into a different car headed towards them to plow into the chase car and stop them. The whole city becomes a weapon. Then I got hands on time with the multiplayer. Their Shift mechanism showed back up. In the mode I played, I was tasked to follow the trail of a lead car. However, the lead car was fast and agile, and my only chance to win would be to shift repeatedly to slow down my foes and maintain a close distance. It was insanely fun. The match becomes one with trash talking and intense gameplay. In the end, I was beaten by the cute girl there to show off the game. But I had fun. Driver is certainly worthy of notice.
