New Anime Premiering on Adult Swim
Cartoon Network was the station that introduced my generation to anime. Say what you will about Dragon Ball Z, but the popularity of that particular anime allowed the American anime craze to finally ignite. Networks fought for the airing rights to many popular anime series, such as Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh! You ask any serious anime fan how these shows compare to the best anime has to offer, and they will laugh in your face. They may have not been the best anime, but they opened the door to allow good anime a chance to be bought by any channel wanting to take advantage of the anime craze. The first network to do this was Adult Swim. Cowboy Bebop was the milestone series that cemented how masterful, complex, and emotionally resonant an anime series can be.
For the longest time, Adult Swim was a haven for anime fans with no cash to buy the over-expensive DVDs, or a slow internet connection that restricted them from downloading animes. Every night, eager fans got lost in the stories of Samurai Champloo, or Trigun. However, lately the anime craze that television studios once proudly took part in is dying, and Adult Swim was forced to cut their anime to strictly Saturdays as a result of low ratings. As an anime advocate, I'm always in support of networks still trying to keep anime alive on television. On June 25th, Adult swim will premiere a new series: Durarara!! (The exclamation marks are apart of the title)
Durarara!! is an ensemble piece about a teenage boy searching for an extraordinary life while working as a criminal courier, and how his life comes into contact with the most dangerous people in town. When it comes to the stories that are in anime there is always more to the plot than what can be summed up. Therefore, watch the trailer below and make your own decision whether it looks like something you may be interested in. Although the trailer is in Japanese, it should give you a good idea as to what to expect in terms of mood. Tune in June 25th for the world premiere on Adult Swim.
